Don't Stop Reading Aloud

Many of us make the mistake of stopping read alouds once our children can independently read. Check out these statistics about the frequency of read alouds at home:

  • 59 % of children ages 0 to 5 are read to at home

  • 38% of children ages 6 to 8 are read to at home

  • 17% of children ages 9 to 11 are read to at home

In. the 2018 Scholastic 'Kids and Family Reading Report' this phenomenon is called 'the decline at nine'.

Sometimes kids push us away, thinking that being read to is 'babyish'. But stay strong and continue your home read alouds! There are multiple benefits to reading aloud to older children, as documented in '10 Reasons to Read to Big Kids Too' (Common Sense Media article.)
