The Power of Read Alouds and Independent Reading

Today is a big day! It marks the release of my wildly anticipated (okay, I'm the one with anticipation) International Literacy Association position paper - all about the power of read alouds and independent reading.

Did you know that there are many many classrooms in which students do not hear a daily read aloud?! Even worse, did you know that there are many schools that believe that having students do independent reading is not an effective use of instructional time?! My hope is that this position paper will transform classrooms today - so that every child, every day experiences independent reading and being read to. In it, I call read alouds and independent reading the 'cornerstones of effective literacy instruction'. Share your thoughts, share with a colleague, and happy reading!
